CRC Press

Through the years, CRC Press has gone through a number of acquisitions and mergers, but its name and its mission remain intact. Currently CRC Press functions as the principal science and technology book division of the Taylor & Francis Group, an Informa Company. In getting to this notable position, more changes have occurred than we can list.
The acquisition of Lewis Publishers in 1990 made CRC the leading publisher of environmental science books and the subsequent additions of St. Lucie Press and Auerbach Publishing extended our reach into business management and information technology. The acquisition of Chapman & Hall's mathematics and statistics titles in 1998 took us to the head of the class in these two fields.
In 2003 CRC Press became a member of the Taylor & Francis publishing group. No scientific publisher has a more illustrious history than Taylor & Francis. Established in 1783, Taylor & Francis launched the world leading physics and material science journal, the Philosophical Magazine, which was the first of the more than 1000 journals it now publishes covering nearly every facet of human endeavor.
As if marrying into that lineage wasn't impressive enough, CRC Press also benefitted from the independent 2004 merger of Taylor and Francis with Informa. While the corporate name Informa came into being only as of 1998, the organization can trace its roots back to 1734 when the first issue of the maritime publication Lloyd's List was pinned to the wall of Edward Lloyd's City of London coffee shop. With over 150 offices across the world, Informa plc is the leading international provider of specialist information and services for the academic and scientific, professional, and commercial business communities. Operating in over 40 countries, it produces 10,000 events annually. Strong organic growth bolstered by thoughtful acquisitions has made CRC Press / Taylor and Francis Group a leader in science and technical publishing. Many renowned publishers have come under the CRC banner, including Marcel Dekker Publishing, the book division of the Institute of Physics, Productivity Press, and A K Peters LTD. Already an international leader in chemistry, life sciences, engineering, mathematics, statistics, information technology, and computer science, we've strengthened our collection of cutting-edge resources with the addition of lean manufacturing, computer game development, and computer graphics titles. Osprey

Osprey Publishing has been providing books for enthusiasts since 1968 and since then it has grown, evolved and taken on new challenges until it stands today as one of the most successful examples of niche publishing around. It was originally owned by Berkshire Printing, part of Brooke Bond, the tea company. The company was formed to publish Aircam Aviation, its first series, the brainchild of Dick Ward, the leading aviation illustrator. The series grew out of his work on the collectible cards which were then packaged with Brooke Bond tea. The first Osprey book was published in 1969: Aircam Aviation Series.1: North American P-51D Mustang in USAAF-USAF Service. This set the Osprey style of illustrated information books combining detailed and authoritative text, colour and black & white artwork, and photographs in uniform series formats. Martin Windrow remembers that in 1974 he 'was wondering if Men-at-Arms might last another year'. Three decades later, well over 400 titles have been published in that series, and the whole Osprey list now totals nearly 1,500. The central mission is unchanged. Osprey will continue to bring together expert authors and illustrators and military-history enthusiasts by delivering the information readers need to increase their knowledge and to enrich their leisure or professional pursuits. Osprey's enthusiasm for military history is balanced by an equal enthusiasm for excellent publishing. Introducing selected titles:

Introducing selected titles:
God's Final Victory, ContinuumGod’s Final Victory: A Comprehensive Philosophical Case for Universalism by John Kronen and Eric Reitan published by Continuum in 2011. Many theists believe that some sins call not only for divine displeasure or judgment, but for retribution, punishment imposed by God as a just and proportionate penalty for sin. There’s the doctrine that the wicked suffer eternal torment. Authors’ aim in this book is to critique not only the intuitions underlying Berger’s views, but any soteriology which holds that some rational creatures will be forever separated from God. Their aim is to systematically challenge the doctrine of eternal hell in any form and to show that, granted certain core Christian principles, no form of DH (eternal hell) is as plausible as some form of DU (universal salvation). Because authors use traditional Christian starting points, some may think this is more a work of theology than philosophy. Nevertheless, John Kronen and Eric Reitan regard this project as ultimately philosophical because their primary objective is to show that a Christian belief system that includes DU is more rationally coherent than one that includes DH. This book is best classified as a work of Christian philosophical theology. Authors also show that even apart distinctively Christian arguments, a powerful comparative case for DU can be made on the basis of premises that are widely shared among theistic fait traditions. An argument does not thereby rule out the belief that universal salvation is achieved through the Incarnation of Christ and His atoning work. Many contemporary Christian thinkers who embrace DH also hold that all will be given an adequate revelation of Christ, at least at death, if not before it. This book presents scholarly monographs offering cutting-edge research and debate. John Kronen is Professor of Philosophy at the University of St. Thomas, USA. Eric Reitan is Professor of Philosophy at Oklahoma State University, USA and author.
Exiles, Outcasts, Strangers, ContinuumExiles, Outcasts, Strangers: Icons of Marginalization in Post World War II Narrative by Mary Jo Muratore published by Continuum in 2011. As we trace the history of Western literature, we confront a matrix of recurring themes and refrains, in some contexts residual or secondary, in others primordial or obtrusive by their stirring presence. In this book, author seize the broad paradigm of alienation and apply to it specific parameters and conditions so as to bring coherence to a topic innately resistant to order. After WWII, formerly colonized nations clamored earnestly for independence. Liberation from the
legacy of colonization, proved much more difficult. The racism, class rivalry and linguistic domination imposed by the colonizers remained, creating a host of identity problems for the indigenous population. Trough this account, the reader will engage in a journey encountering newly cast rereading from an internationally diverse of writers such as Camus, Sabato, Wiesel, Gener, Naipaul, Langevin, and others.Empire and Exile, Continuum Empire and Exile: Postcolonial Readings of the Book of Jeremiah by Steed Vernyl Davidson published by T & T Clark International/Continuum in 2011. The ideas in this book have percolated within the author most of the lifetime and are still undergoing further refinement. This book reflects the outcome of author’s doctoral dissertation. This account differs from the dissertation in several years. The dissertation contains full translations in the interest of staying away from complex arguments, valid in themselves, that can take away the focus from the more germane point being made in this work. The postcolonial approach to the book of Jeremiah is in its infancy. Much more will be written in the future that will both complement and contradict what lies in this book. The most notable revision occurs in Chapter 7, which reflects Steed Vernyl Davidson’s continued thinking on the topic of postcolonial biblical hermeneutics.
Philosophy and the Burden of Theological Honesty, ContinuumPhilosophy and The Burden of Theological Honesty: A Donald MacKinnon Reader by John McDowell (editor) published by T & T Clark/Continuum in 2011. MacKinnon’s writing is frequently dense, always involves complex reasoning, and is usually arranged in some quite unpredictable patterns. There’s a sense of messiness that attends to the suitable pressure exerted by a sense of proper dense texture of the ‘ordinary’. More attention needs to be paid by readers to MacKinnon’s responsibility to the Gospel, and the vocation of offering appropriate forms of therapy to the churches that strain towards saccharine resolution, trade complacency in sentimentality. MacKinnon’s intellectual engagements takes him into some dark places, enabling him to expose sharply as improper any and all refusals of discontinuities. MacKinnon has been one of the most important and influential of-post-war British theologians and religious philosophers. He had a significant impact on the development and subsequent theological work of the likes of Nicolas Lash, David Ford, Rowan Williams and John Milbank. In this collection several of MacKinnon’s most outstanding papers not yet published in book format are collected together with an Editorial Introduction by MacKinnon’s own students. Here is another reminder of MacKinnon’s intellectual brilliance. John McDowell is Morpeth Professor of Theology, university of Newcastle, NSW, Australia.

How to Understand a Painting: Decoding Symbols in ArtHow to Understand a Painting: Decoding Symbols in Art by Francoise Barbe-Gall published by Frances Lincoln in 2011. Man, bewildered by the world around him, seeks to interpret the shapes he sees and to reassure himself by finding some coherence with them. The history of painting clearly makes use of the visual vocabulary. In this book author illuminates our understanding of how symbols have been used and developed in art from 15 to 21st century. He offers 68 vivid examples. Painting has always made abundant use of forms and objects to convey abstract ideas: hope, love, loyalty and betrayal. Today art lovers learn to look out for all the small things that can easily seem like unimportant details, or simply decoration. But a flower, a reflection in a mirror or a bird in flight nearly always mean more than they first appear to. figure in the short-lived revival of New Image Painting that took place at that time, partly in reaction to 2 decades of conceptual and ideas-based art. October 2010
CRC Press

Today CRC Press functions as the principal science and technology book division of the Taylor & Francis Group. The acquisition of Lewis Publishers in 1990, made CRC the leading publisher of environmental science books. The subsequent additions of St. Lucie Press and Auerbach Publishing extended CRC reach into business management and information technology. The acquisition of Chapman & Hall's mathematics and statistics titles took CRC to the head of the class in these two fields.
The most important change occurred when in 2003, CRC Press became a member of the Taylor & Francis publishing group. No scientific publisher has a more illustrious history than Taylor & Francis. Established in 1783, Taylor & Francis was truly the voice of the European enlightenment. With little more than the power of conviction of a young printer’s apprentice named Richard Taylor, it launched the world leading physics and material science journal, the Philosophical Magazine, which was the first of the more than 1000 journals it now publishes covering nearly every facet of human endeavor.

As if marrying into that lineage wasn’t impressive enough, CRC Press also benefitted from the independent 2004 merger of Taylor and Francis with Informa. While the corporate name Informa came into being only as of 1998, the organization can trace its bloodline back to 1734 when the first issue of the maritime publication Lloyd's List was pinned to the wall of Edward Lloyd's City of London coffee shop. With over 150 offices across the world, Informa plc is the leading international provider of specialist information and services for the academic and scientific, professional, and commercial business communities. Operating in over 40 countries, it produces 10,000 events annually
.

Merging the path of CRC Press with that Taylor & Francis and Informa, has expanded the company’s depth as well as its reach. A host of other renowned publishers has come under the CRC banner in recent years. These include Dekker Publishing, the book division of the Institute of Physics, Garland Press, Lawrence Erlbaum, and Haworth.

CRC: Evolved Cellular Network: Planning and Optimization for UMTS and LTE by Lingyang and Jia ShenEvolved Cellular Network: Planning and Optimization for UMTS and LTE by Lingyang Song and Jia Shen (editors) in 2010. A key aim of modern cellular communication networks is to provide high-capacity coverage over a wide area. The cellular concept was first deployed in the U.S. in 1947. By breaking the coverage area down into many small cells, the total system capacity could be substantially increased, enabling more users to be served simultaneously. The use of different frequencies in cells that are close to each other continued as the predominant cellular technique for the next 4 decades, up to and including the Global System for Mobile Communications, which was the first cellular system to achieve worldwide penetration, with billions of users… This important account presents an accessible introduction to all stages of planning and optimizing UMTS, HSPA, and LTE cellular networks. It starts with overview of each type of network, with channel models and basic techniques; explains the challenges operators and vendors are likely to face and explains the critical role network planning and optimization play in addressing these challenges. It also analyzes techniques for major mechanisms, troubleshooting, trending, and conducting radio performance analysis. This book provides the practical understanding that meet the ever-growing demands for mobile data solutions.

Paying Gods, Princeton University PressPlaying Gods: Ovid’s Metamorphoses and the Politics of Fiction by Andrew Feldherr published by Princeton University Press in 2010. In this book, the author’s goal is to expand the understanding of the modes by which the work facilitates the audience’s reflection on and redefinition of the hierarchies operative within Roman society. The “politics” of Metamorphoses it addresses does not mean the same thing as Ovid’s politics, and readers will find no explicit discussion of the attitudes of the poet toward emperor. This book offers a novel interpretation of politics and identity in Ovid’s epic poem of transformations, the Metamorphoses. Playig Gods argues that Ovid uses the problem of fiction in the text to redefine the power of poetry in Augustine Rome. The book provides the range of cultural phenomena that defined and projected Augustan authority, including theater, visual arts, and spectacle. Andrew Feldherr is author and professor of classics at Princeton University. He is also editor of The Cambridge Companion to the Roman Historians.

The Axe and the Oath, Princeton University PressThe Axe and the Oath: Ordinary Life in the Middle Ages by Robert Fossier published by Princeton University Press in 2010. In attempting to shake up “certitudes,” author’s hope is to lead the reader to raise questions about them, naturally leaving open the possibility of returning to them if they prove the better choice. Robert Fossier is author of many books, he is professor emeritus of medieval history at the Sorbonne and editor of The Cambridge History of the Middle Ages.

A work of the highest artistic achievement, the choir harmoniously integrated the elements and motifs we now consider as Gothic. But the building of the choir should not be seen in isolation, it was part of social, political, and philosophical developments that had began earlier. In Gothic architecture something solid is being removed from its natural surrounding... The affinity between conservative cultural criticism and an inflated reverence for Gothic has a long tradition in Germany. But art history, which was just emerging as a discipline, quickly established that Gothic especially cathedral, was one of the original achievements of Germany’s arch-enemy of the time, France. Gothic is a high point of European art. This beautifully illustrated with stunning color photographs and drawings edition explores the history of Gothic in all fascinating details. In this book, reader will find historical information on Gothic’s political and architectural background, Gothic as a French export, Gothic in Italy and England, Netherlands and Germany, Spain and Portugal...
