Charles Scribner's Sons was founded in 1846 at the Brick Church Chapel on New York's Park Row.
In 1996 Charles Scribner's Sons celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding. The house has moved many times since then, and yet there has been remarkable continuity. Charles Scribner's Sons predecessors — who published the first Dictionary of American Biography in the 1920s and the first edition of the Dictionary of American History in 1940 — would recognize what Charles Scribner's Sons is about. Company mission remains broad — to produce reference works that will serve a wide range of readers, from high school students to advanced scholars. In 1999 Charles Scribner's Sons joined Thomson Gale. With Thomson Gale the company finds its reference mission strengthened, energized, and ready for the 21st century.

This new edition replaces 150 obsolete entries and
adds nearly 600 new topics. The new edition provides revisions to hundreds more. Encyclopedia of Latin American History & Culture is dedicated to the memory of Jay Kinsbruner, Editor in Chief, who died in 2007.
This second edition of Encyclopedia of Latin American History & Culture is a monumental work that presents the best of scholarship on Latin America, and incorporates new material in substantial ways.
